Monument Valley | Day 2

April 29, 2017 in Photography, Adventure, Retrospective

Waking up in a new place when you came in during the night can be quite exciting, but I wasn't ready for what was outside. At some point during the night, the fog rolled in thicker than I've ever seen it in Colorado frosting everything in its path. I didn't quite get up for sunrise, but there was still some lovely color in the sky. Unfortunately, the fog didn't stick around for long, but I did find a beautifully tranquil pond nearby.

The first stop on my day was to Four Corners. I knew it was going to be a touristy place, so I wanted to get there early. I'd never been in four states at once, so that was pretty fun. Afterward, I didn't have a plan; I just wanted to be in Monument Valley for golden hour. So what I ended up doing was driving around as many back roads as I could to see as much of the area as possible. I was fortunate because the storm that passed through the day before left some fantastic clouds hanging in the area. I got a great view of Ship Rock and eventually ended up near the Navajo National Monument, so I decided to have a look.

After passing through the monument and exploring, I found an old dirt road that headed west in a way that I could burn some afternoon sun while I was waiting for sunset and explore some new territory. The road was made of this soft red sand that made me think or Australia or something. In certain places, the sand got soft enough that I was getting a little worried about getting stuck, but my small truck did ok. There was absolutely no one out there. As I was wandering around, I came across a fascinating site; It was a long dried up waterfall and river.

As the day passed by, I slowly made my way up to Monument Valley. There ended up being more traffic in the are than I would have preferred because I wanted to drive slowly and look around, but I would be mindful and allow people to pass. At one point I got out and started to explore some of the erosion marks in the area. I eventually made my way to the famous section of road that gave you the iconic view of the Mesas. I decided to stay here for sunset and watched as different people came through taking pictures. At one point a couple of skateboarders came by, and I got an incredible shot of them going down the road.

I stayed until sunset and watched the sky change colors as the temperature dropped surprising low. My day in the south-west was completed, and I needed to head back, but I had one more night before I left. I had a two hour drive ahead of me and I was getting pretty tired. I was really happy with how the day turned out and I began to start learning the lesson of going with the flow.

Monument Valley | Day 1

April 28, 2017 in National Park, Photography, Retrospective

I had three days and two nights to see as much as I could on my first solo adventure. I prepared my truck the best I could with the right gear and supplies to give myself the most ease of mind I could muster to focus on photography. The plan was pretty simple; I wanted to see Monument Valley and see that famous stretch of road I remember so distinctly from Forrest Gump. Along the way, I also wanted to visit Four Corners and Mesa Verde National Park.

I headed out bright and early to avoid as much traffic as I could getting out of Denver. It didn't take too long for what little traffic there was to thin out as I got further and further into the Rockies. On a whim, I decided to visit the Great Sand Dunes National Park as it wasn't too far out of the way and I was hoping to see snow on the surrounding peaks. I ended up having to race a storm that was rolling in from the west, but I ended up having enough time to get some great photos and eat my lunch before the rain caught up. That little race wasn't just the beginning of my experience with that storm.

The storm turned out to be a blizzard that hit Denver pretty hard, and as I went over my last pass towards south-west Colorado, it gave me a run for my money too. It took about 20 minutes for the strength of the storm to hit, and visibility went down to around 20 feet. The passing traffic came to a crawl as cars up ahead started crashing into each other. At one point the visibility got down to about 5 feet with snow coming down thick. After coming over the pass, I had to make it back down... I'll just describe the experience as intense.

Now that was on the west side of the Rockies, a first for me to drive, the weather lifted, and a beautiful sunrise was in store. I made my way into Mesa Verde later than I planned. Though I don't regret my stop at the Dunes, that plus the blizzard put me in the park after hours. Though the park was still open, they don't close the gates, the central area with the ruins are locked off to prevent vandalism. Though I did at least get a decent sneak view, I would love to come back. With the little light I had left in the day, I explored as much of the mesa as I could before turning into to my Airbnb. My first day of adventure was a success. All my gear was charging, I had a fantastic first day, and I was excited to see Monument Valley the next day.

Monument Valley | Day 0

April 28, 2017 in Thoughts, Retrospective

I wanted to spend a little time talking about what lead up to this trip as there was a fundamental shift in how I approached travel. You see, before this trip I had mixed feelings about travel, going back even further, I was kind of against it. At one point in my life, I didn't understand the idea of wanting to see things for yourself. Taking a trip to Iceland sounded more like a waste of money compared to watching a documentary from my home.

The first shift came from some travel I started doing for work. This was, for the most part, all travel inside the states. This was an eye-opener on how easy it is to travel by plane and get a hotel and all that Jazz. I did, also, take a few trips out of the country to Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and Ghana. These experiences made me value seeing the world with my own eyes and experiencing cultures and environments in person. But these types of trips tend to be few and far between as they are "special." That's where the next shift comes into play; it won't happen unless you make it happen.

Brittany was going to go out of town for a weekend trip with her friend. So I, nearly joking, said I was going to go out of town myself. I regret saying that as soon as the words were out of my mouth. What was I committing too? What I didn't realize at the time is that I had a lot of fear about doing something on my own as I'd never gone out alone for more than a day. I'm happy to report that is was incredibly easy once I just committed. All I had to do was find a place to spend the night and make a loose plan for what I wanted to see.

For whatever reason, this opened the world up to me and how I needed to take advantage of the time I had left in Colorado. I was about to move back to Oregon in two months, and there was still a lot to see.

Trail Ridge Road Sunrise

April 25, 2017 in National Park, Adventure, Photography, Retrospective

Feeling quite inspired, I decided it was time to make the trip up to Rocky Mountain National Park for a proper sunrise. I don't think I've ever woken up so early, I've stayed up this late many times, but never woke up at 2:30 AM before. I was trying to, of course, beat the sun, but I also had a 2-1/2 hour drive ahead of me. The trip was pretty uneventful until I got into the park, that's when the fun begins.

I made my plane to see the sunrise at the lookout on Trail Ridge Road. This road closes just a few hundred yards above for the winter. The forecast was evident that evening so it would make for a beautiful sunrise, but for freezing temperatures. As I made my way up in elevation towards the lookout, I started hearing crunching noises. Then I started slowing down, eventually stopped and started turning sideways even though I was gunning it. I tried a few more times but was going nowhere, and I was running out of time. I got out to see what I was dealing with and that's when I realized what the crunching sound was, about a 1/2 inch of ice.

With no time to waste and knowing that the road was closed ahead, I decided to leave my truck where it was stuck in the middle of the lane and deal with it later. Unfortunately, I still had about a mile or s ahead of me to get to the viewpoint.

Thankfully I made it with enough time to set up and not be too stressed for time. The sunrise was amazing. There is something so special about dawn maybe its that fact that so little see them compared to sunsets. I had the place all to myself, not a soul in sight. Just me and the beauty before me.

Once I was done soaking it all in, I carefully made my way back down the ice road to deal with the truck. Luckily being stuck on an incline with the downhill direction being where I wanted to go, it wasn't that difficult to get unstuck. I did a bit of exploring of the park afterwards hoping to find some elk, but didn't see any. Later that week I replaced my old worn out city tires with a new set of all terrains.

Bighorn Sheep

April 23, 2017 in National Park, Photography, Retrospective

Every time we've gone by Horseshoe Falls, it's always been incredibly crowded. So naturally we've stayed away, but we could only ignore it for so long and decided it was time to see what the fuss was about. We got out there bright and early to avoid all the crowds. Our plan was successful, and we had the falls all to ourselves.

We made our way up the short hike to the falls and explored the area for a bit. Navigating the river turned out to be a little more tricky than I thought it would be with fresh ice over all the rocks. It was nearly impossible to tell a wet rock from a frozen one.

We eventually made our way up the mountainside, noting some fresh bear tracks, up to a little meadow. To our delight across the distance was a resting heard of Bighorn Sheep. I'd never seen these guys before with my own eyes, so I was pretty excited. It was right then that my camera battery decided to die, I couldn't believe it, I even had a spare battery in the truck. Hopping it was just from the cold or something like that, I put the battery in my pocket and made my way to the sheep.

Jesse recently picked up an excellent 70-300mm lens so he was sniping these guys out. After he got some shots, he let me borrow his lens and my battery in the pocket idea worked giving me a few shots. How awesome it is to see new wildlife up close in person, and with this zoom lens, really close. After that, I pretty much immediately bought myself the same lens, I didn't want to miss an opportunity like that ever.
