To Marys Peak, the Coast and Back Again

May 28, 2018 in Adventure, Photography

The final day of my adventure "stay-cation" had me with a travel buddy. Brittany wanted to get some exploring in herself, so she joined me on my last day as we visited Marys Peak, the Devils Punch Bowl, Thor's Wells, and the Heceta Head Lighthouse. We took on the day in that order, and except for the lighthouse, it was all new territory for the both of us. I regularly find myself amazed by always wanting to get away for an exotic adventure when there is still so much to see in our backyards.

Marys Peak was beautiful, and we happened to be there for a fantastic display of wildflowers, but I really enjoyed my time on the coast, and more specifically, Cape Perpetua. This is incredible, to be honest, I had no idea we had this sort of thing in Oregon. For one, a blowhole of this size, and two the formations of the rocks, it felt like we were back in Hawaii. I could have spent hours there, but I'll have to save it for another day, I think it would be perfect for sunset.

Overall, my little "stay-cation" adventure was a lot of fun, and I want to try and do more weekends like it when it makes sense. It was fun to see so much of Oregon and the variety it has to offer with her beauty. It was also a lot of fun to end the last day with Brittany.

Too Much Snow for Comfort

May 27, 2018 in Adventure, Photography

Day two of my "stay-cation" adventure was going to be that of a redemption story... kind of. After failing once before, I was eager to give Indigo Lake a second try. I also had a few other plans to see a couple of waterfalls. It was another early morning, but I had a hot cup of coffee in my hand and was more than excited to hike into Indigo Lake. When I eventually made the turn from Crescent Lake to head back to Summit Lake, I quickly realized the folly in my thinking that the first trip, this was one rough road, not to mention it would have been completely buried in snow a few months back.

Unfortunately, getting to the trailhead as not in the day's cards. I was able to make it to Summit Lake, but on the west side, I ran into more snow than my truck could handle. I did my best to push through what I could, but every obstacle ahead of me was increasing in difficulty, and I continued. Without a wench and being along, I finally gave into my "spidey sense" that was warning me about getting stuck and decided to turn around. While I was turning around, two dirt bikes came from where I was heading, and I was curious to hear what news they had about the road. Unfortunately, they only confirmed my decision to turn around as that was what they had to do as well. Not wanting to take a complete loss for my efforts to get in here, I stretched my legs for a bit and hikes around Summit Lake on a trail that got me pretty deep into the wilderness to some beautiful small lakes.

Next, I was off to Lemolo Falls. As the crow flys, I was pretty close to the falls, but as the road drives, it was a good little trek. I tried to shave off some time and take an old dirt road pass through the woods but got myself into more snow forcing me to turn around. I need to invest in some better snow options for my truck. Fortunately, this pushed me back to the main road where I curiously explored a quarry for sanding the roads during winter. It looked like the sand was made from old lava rock as the color was a deep red. It felt like I was in Australia or Africa, it was pretty neat.

Now we get to more waterfalls. When I go out, I always love getting into the wilderness around water, any water, it doesn't matter to me. But all the sudden I found my self in a quest for waterfalls that somehow I feel was inspired by my recent trip to Abiqua Falls. So over the course of the next few hours, I would hike in to see Lemolo Falls, Warm Spring Falls, and Watson Falls. All of the falls were equally beautiful in their own ways, but I'm not sure I could pick a favorite. A side note, on my way home a local wood mill not too far from where I grew up caught on fire in the night. I stopped to take a picture from a distance, maybe a mile or so away, I was amazed by how bright the blaze was and how well it lite up the night sky. I hope everyone is ok.

The Old Bohemia Mines

May 26, 2018 in Adventure, Photography

Work has been pretty busy, and spring just snuck right past me. I try to do what I can to get out on the weekends and plan a few trips here and there, but somehow time the time got away. Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial beginning of summer for me. This dates back to all the camping trips we took growing up marking the official start of our summer schedule. With this in mind and the fact that last year I was taking a lot of trips to see what I could before leaving Colorado, I feel feeling a bit down that I hadn't made any plans. I didn't have enough time to make a plan that required too much travel, like going to Alaska or something of that scale, so I asked myself what a three-day extended "stay-cation" would look like for a photographer? I landed on a three-day jam-packed weekend of seeing many local sites that were on my todo list.

Day 1: The Old Bohemia Mines and Parker Falls.
The mines and this area of the Calapooia Mountains have been on my list for a long time. With no idea of what to expect, I got up early and set my GPS for the Bohemia Mines. The day ended up being relatively overcast and foggy giving the mountains a beautiful atmosphere that only fog can provide. I opted for taking the older rough road that got me away from the weekend campers to see the less traveled area of the woods. It's always interesting trying to piece together the meaning or purpose of old "ruins" or ghost towns. Why was that there? What was that for? How long have these places been abandon? Why did they leave? I know I could have done a bunch of research before going, but there is something special about making up your own story in the moment. For me, it makes the experience a little more magical.

After exploring a few mines(they are all gated off) and doing my best to stay on some of these very tiny and rough wagon roads, I headed over to Parker Falls for a hike. There are so many waterfalls in the Cascades, hundreds if not more. There are few fairly popular ones, but many of them are like Parkers Falls: very beautiful and quite easy to get to and have the place to yourself. The first day of my "stay-cation" adventure was a success, but I'm just getting started.

Abiqua Falls

May 20, 2018 in Adventure, Hike, Photography

I have a large map in my office of Oregon that I mark all the places I've been (in a photo/adventure sense) and all the place I want to see. Sometimes this map is an overwhelming reminder of all the things I haven't done, but most the time its a source of inspiration of whats still to be explored. One of the first pins I put in the map for things to see was Abiqua Falls. It's one of those falls that's surrounded by basalt cooling columns from the Cascade mountains early volcanic past.

I woke up pretty early to get out there around 7 AM. The day's weather was slated for morning overcast, so I wasn't in a hurry for the light, but I wanted to beat any crowd if possible. To get there, you take this old gravel road that I would only recommend taking if you have decent clearance on your vehicle and the weather is pretty dry. I would reckon you could get into some trouble real quick if you don't know what you're doing but is pretty easy going for the most part.

Once you get to the trailhead, you have a quick hike down to the creek and hike a good portion of the way along the water. The reveal to the waterfall is quite spectacular as it hides behind a broad curve in the creek obstructing your view but allowing you to hear the falls before you get there.

Photographing a destination like this is kind of unique for me. I usually focus on a day of adventure and shoot the whole trip, but in this case, I was going to one place to photograph one thing. It was kind of weird because I was getting antsy that I wasn't moving, that I was shooting too many photos of one subject matter. After a while though, as I settled into what I was doing, I slowly was able to think more creatively in the location rather than just taking the easy shots I saw at first. It was a great reminder to slow down when I shoot and give the space I'm in a moment to reveal its more profound beauty.

4 Hundred to 14 Thousand in 36 Hours

May 07, 2018 in Adventure, Hike, Photography

After living in Colorado for two years, one thing I always regretted not doing was doing a 14er, that is summiting a mountain peak that is above 14,000 feet from sea level. Its been nearly a year now that I've been back in Oregon and I've really grown accustomed to the thick air down here at 400 feet. Well an opportunity came up for me to be in Colorado to meet a potential client and I knew I needed to stay through the weekend to check a 14er off the bucket list.

We were flying into Denver Thursday night and was going to have the client meeting Friday morning, so I decided to stay through Sunday to attempt the 14er on Saturday. That would give me nearly 36 hours to acclimate... I hoped. My buddy Jesse was going to lead me up the mountain as well as plan where we were going. We Originally planned for Grays Peak, but it received 20" of snow the night we flew in so we changed to Quandary Peak instead.

We wanted to be above the tree-line for sunrise so we needed to hit the trail at 5am at the latest and since we were two hours away from the trailhead, that meant a 2AM wake up call. Here's an interesting fact: The Quandary Peak trailhead, were we parked to start our hike, is only 400 feet below the the summit of Oregons tallest peak, Mount Hood.

Really quickly, right from the beginning I felt the affects of the altitude, to the point were I was really getting concerned if I was going to get sick or not. Luckily I was able to push through and realized I would most likely not get altitude sickness, that I was going to mainly be dealing with the mental game and the thin air. Once we broke through the tree-line and watched the sunrise, I was completely reenergized and knew I could do it as long as I paced myself and stayed hydrated.

The climb to the top was brutal, the thin air, the elevation gain, and the blistering cold wind made things so difficult, but my slow and steady pace eventually got me to the top. It felt like the last 500 feet took the longest, but getting to the top was so rewarding. After we got to the top, all these dogs summited behind us and acted like it was no big deal to climb a mountain, they just wanted to play. After enjoying some much needed rest at the top and a few good snacks, we decided to begin our way back down and saw one of the most intense things I'd ever seen.

As we were hiking down a paraglider came flying over us from the summit with skies still attached. We all stoped and watched in awe as he glided nearly 25 hundred feet down to the frozen lake below. Then right behind him came his buddy, but his trip would be quite a different experience. The first guy slowly glided his was down, weaving back and fourth until he made it to the lake. His friend came around and just as he cleared into the air above the valley (2,500 feet between his feet and the ground) the wind shifted and started folding his parachute as he began to make quick drops out of control. Everyone on the mountain side froze in fear as we watched in horror. Thankfully through skill and quick thinking, he was able to regain control and got down to the frozen lake as quick as possible safe and sound. That could have gone so many different ways.

The way down was much more rapid compared to the accent, but I still had to remember to pace myself and take breaks to catch my breath. Overall, this was one of the most challenging things I've ever done physically. The sense of accomplishment is so satisfying when you push yourself harder than you knew you could.
